Me

My name is Emma Simpson, I founded Avalon in 2006 having spent ten years gaining a broad experience and knowledge of beauty therapy. After a lot of hard work and investment I've succeeded in creating a friendly, intimate beauty studio.

Beat the Winter Blues

Colder weather, shorter days and indoors more can affect our mood, sleep patterns, and well-being. Many people are affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) at this time of year. Or you may be working from home, with more screen time, not going out so often. 

 

Here are eight strategies you can try to beat the winter blues. 

 

1. Boost your mood - go outdoors. Just a short walk will enhance your mood, especially if you do it in the morning, it resets your body clock. Getting outside daily, even for a few minutes, can make a huge impact on your mood and help target symptoms related to a lack of daylight. 

2. Boost  your mood with food. Eat protein with breakfast, lunch, and dinner, this can enhance mood and prevent sugar and carb cravings later in the day. Eat foods high in vitamin D such as fatty fish, fish oil, and vitamin D fortified foods like milk, orange juice, breakfast cereal, yogurt, and other foods.

3. Boost your sleep routine. Inadequate, irregular sleep doctors' say disrupts cortisol rhythms and impacts hormone production. Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Have a simple bedtime routine that signals rest, such as taking a bath, turning down the lights, or drinking a cup of herbal tea. Then expose yourself to light as soon as you wake up. Sleep in a cool, dark room. Don’t use electronics in your bedroom.

4. Ditch the worries. Write them all on a piece of paper before bed so if you wake up in the night, tell your mind you don't need to worry because it's noted and waiting for you to tackle in the morning.

5. Get Physical. It's shown to boost mood, decrease symptoms of depression, and reduce stress. Start slowly and build up to 30 to 60 minutes a day, five days a week, of aerobic exercise, strength training, yoga, or other fitness-related activities.

6. Get talking. Friends, family, co-workers, and sponsors, keep the contact and socialisation, it's important. If there's anything lockdown taught us it's that. Talk to supportative, positive people. 

7. Ditch the news. Take a break from the news, it seems to be all bad all the time these days!

Hands and nails rescue 

We're all constantly using hand sanitisers which kills bad (and good) bacteria on our skin. Often with harsh, toxic ingredients our hands and nails are taking a battering. Make a booking with Melissa our manicure, eye-brow and makeup specialist. She'll rehydrate your hands and nails with an OPI spa manicure or one of our other treatments. You'll be amazed at the difference it makes. Have your eyebrows and makeup done to complete a feeling of total well-being.

Face rescue - Maskne

Are you suffering from Maskne? When we wear a mask, this creates a moist, humid environment as it seals in breath, skin oils and sweat, and can lead to irritation, rashes and acne. Masks themselves may also irritate skin simply by being in contact with the face for long periods of time. This can trigger existing conditions like eczema, psoriasis or rosacea. We have a number of treatments to re-balance your skin. Enzyme-based cleansers can be gentler on the skin, while clay-based masks can help the detoxification process. With a little help from us and using our natural skin care brand MONU, we can help you prevent it. 

Keeping Safe - Covid precautions 

Initially Covid precautions and additonal cleaning routines took us some time and we had no alternative but to reduce the number of appointments. Now it's our new normal, we're quicker, and the upside is we can offer more appointments. Good news for us, our regulars and new clients. 

 

We completed the Barbicide Hygiene Course on Infection Control for beauty professionals. We wear PPE. Before and after each client we clean and disinfect treatment rooms, change gloves, wash our hands thoroughly.Communal spaces are cleaned at the end of the day. Rooms are ventilated. Towels and uniforms are removed daily and laundered at high temperatures. Disposable paper drapes and single-use items are used where necessary. We have touchless automatic hand wash in toilets. Appointments are pre-booked only, sorry no walk-ins. Touchless payment is advised, or pre-payment, no cash. Appointments are staggared to avoid clients waiting in reception. Please don't arrive too early. In reception chairs are two meters apart, magazines and non-essential items removed. If arriving by car, you may wait in our car park if you prefer. Please come alone. On entering please either wash hands or use hand sanitiser. Please don't visit if you or anyone in your household feels unwell. Please wear a mask.

Bride, groom, mums, bridesmaids, hen party - the entire bridal party. Make sure you're relaxed and ready for those close ups. Top to toe treatments to make you look and feel fantastic. Or concentrate on face, decollatage, hands and back. Tailor your package and include our makeup artist Melissa for your special day.

Gift Vouchers

Gift vouchers, the perfect gift to spoil those special people in your life. You choose the amount. You can either collect or we're happy to post it. If collecting please phone/text us first to arrange it, as we're continuing with our Covid precautions and we only have pre-booked appointments and visits. Sorry no walk-ins.
